Universal Design Home in Woodlands Creek - Part 2
In September, we had the privilege to begin construction on a gorgeous and custom-designed ranch-style home in the Woodlands Creek neighborhood of West Des Moines. The home was designed with input from the homeowners, who are family-oriented empty nesters excited to be located near their kids and grandkids again! The homeowners wanted a home they could enjoy long into their senior years without having to make modifications for accessibility but was still modern and current. We described many of the details that went into the design in our December 2017 Woodlands Creek Universally Designed Home - Part 1 blog here.
Aging in Place: Accessibility Details
The universally designed open floor plan, which allows for wheelchair access throughout, includes a zero-threshold entry and an elevator. The beautiful hardwood floors on the main level also ensure accessibility is never an issue while still looking sleek and upscale. With construction at this home ending within the next few months, it would be outrageous to exclude mentioning the beautiful Colonial-style oak doors throughout the home along with the nicely appointed built-in storage and custom stone fireplace in the Great Room. The house also has two ADA accessible master suites (one on each floor), along with a wet bar downstairs and Jack and Jill bedrooms upstairs.
An Elevator Allows for Mobility in All Circumstances
Installing an elevator in a residential building calls for specialized knowledge and additional tasks, which include building the elevator shaft with additional footings for extra support. We also opted to add a sump pit below the elevator shaft to prevent water accumulation. Additionally, this elevator includes a backup battery so it can be used safely during any power outage. We know that having this elevator will not only make living in this house enjoyable at any age, but also keeps the homeowners safe and worry-free.
This home is one-of-a-kind, but one of the most unique aspects of this house is the storm shelter located below the front porch stoop. This fully-cemented room is accessible from the basement and offers safety and protection during any severe weather threat.
With the elevator, custom cabinetry, doors, and millwork currently being installed, this impressive Woodlands Creek home is scheduled to be complete in late Spring.
